The Award Winning Homies Low Down!

Homies on Donkeys is a multi-award winning Mexican taquería owned and operated by Chef

Smokey Bautista and Sandra Bello. Both hailing from Northern Mexico, the couple founded

Homies in 2017 in Walthamstow’s Wood Street Market with the dream of creating a space

where they could serve dishes inspired by the sights and flavours of their native Tijuana. Out of

a small, 8-seater shop, they developed a small taco menu of dishes like cochinito in chipotle and

a vegan pastor; and slowly evolved to offer staple Baja dishes like octopus, carne asada and

swordfish, all of which would regularly sell out.

Over the span of five and a half years, Homies grew from a tiny neighbourhood taquería to a

“must” stop for taco lovers visiting from all over the country and beyond, mainly by word of

mouth. Mixing a love for food, science, history, art and hip hop resulted in a successful formula

for the couple, earning them accolades in many UK publications, as well winning Dinerama’s

Taco Wars in 2019, BBC 2’s Britain’s Top Takeaways, and The Tacover in 2021.

Having outgrown the space in the market, the couple have shut down their Wood Street shop

and are looking to establish a fully fledged restaurant in 2023, with the same Homies soul, close

to their original home.

And in the meantime they are going to join us in Ireland for two glorious nights, Fridays 20th  and Saturday 21st January 2023!
